CUT BACK FADING PERENNIALS

cut back foliageEarly-summer-flowering plants, such as these border geraniums (Crane's Bill), can be cut back now by about half to two thirds to induce another set of flowers and greatly reduce water requirements (due to reduced leaf area), provided that the soil surface is still fully covered and this cover is not too thin.

THIN OUT FAST-GROWING SHRUBS

Leafy, fast-growing deciduous shrubs quickly drain the borders of water unless kept in check. Thin them out if possible, or even consider cutting them right back. It will save lots of trips with the watering can. Don't worry. They will soon grow back.
